In the fundraising world, few things are more tempting than chasing the elusive major gift from a billionaire or multi-millionaire. After all, who wouldn’t want to land the kind of transformational donation that can fund an entire campaign? But sometimes, in that pursuit, nonprofits end up ignoring the very people who are keeping the lights on: the middle donors.

My LinkedIn connection and fellow fundraising professional Paul Yeghiayan recently posted something that really resonated with me. His words crystalized an idea I think many nonprofits are aware of, but choose to ignore:

“Stop Chasing Billionaires and Multi-Millionaires: Mid-Level Donors Are Your Fastest Path to 7-Figure Growth.”

The Awesome Potential of Mid-Level Donors

Here’s the truth bomb Paul dropped: While nonprofits spend countless hours cultivating ultra-wealthy prospects who may never convert, mid-level donors — those giving between $500 and $5,000 — are quietly fueling the mission. They’re consistent. They’re loyal. And they have a higher lifetime value than many organizations realize.

Let’s talk numbers (Paul’s math):

  • Mid-level donors have a 69% retention rate. Compare that with the <20% retention rate for new donors.
  • In five years, the lifetime value of a mid-level donor can increase by 1,500%, averaging $3,034.

Still not convinced? Consider this:

  • They already know and trust your organization.
  • Mid-level gifts create predictable cash flow.
  • They could be strong candidates for future $50k+ commitments, bequests, or DAF grants.
  • They often act as community ambassadors, bringing in others through social proof and peer influence.

How to Activate the Middle

Here’s a few tips for activating this potentially powerful set of donors (from Paul’s post and my own experience):

  • Create a branded society, like the “Momentum Circle,” starting at $1,000/year.
  • Thank-you videos, insider briefings, and surprise updates help keep these donors feeling special.
  • Personally reach out to a few of these folks every week or month.
  • Ask these donors for their advice, which helps them feel like organizational insiders.

I know how alluring those seven-figure prospects can be. It’s easy to get dazzled by wealth and the potential of a massive gift. But if we’re not nurturing the consistent, loyal, and generous donors already in our corner, we’re sacrificing stability… and a whole lot of opportunity.

Mid-level donors are not a consolation prize. They are your foundation. It’s time to treat them that way.
